The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is pleased to announce the third annual competition for ACLS Digital Extension Grants. The grants, which are made possible by the generous assistance of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, seek to advance humanities scholarship by enhancing established digital projects, extending their reach to new communities of users, and supporting teams of scholars at all career stages as they participate in digital research. The program is especially committed to fostering new connections among scholars from across the spectrum of US higher education institutions.

Funding: Visualizing Digital Scholarship in Libraries and Learning Spaces

North Carolina State University has launched a Mellon-funded project for visualizing digital scholarship in libraries and learning spaces… This call solicits proposals for block grants from library or museum systems that have visualization installations. Block grant recipients can utilize funds for ideas ranging from creating open source scholarly content for visualization environments to developing tools and templates to enhance sharing of visualization work. An advisory panel will select four institutions to receive awards of up to $40,000.

Opportunity: Join the ADHO Steering Committee

The Alliance of Digital Humanities (ADHO) is looking for enthusiastic Digital Humanists who would like to actively help further DH in all its breadth and diversity on a global scale. The ADHO Steering Committee (SC) has several vacancies to be filled, starting August 8, 2017, until July 1st 2018 (when the governance structure of ADHO will change). Extensions of service in some comparable roles after July 1, 2018, may be considered.

If you’re interested in helping ADHO and the worldwide DH community become a more transparent, inclusive, and beneficial network for the many organizations and individuals that make up the ADHO community, then please consider becoming a candidate for one of these volunteer offices.

Funding: Gerda Henkel Fellowship for Digital History

With the generous support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the German Historical Institute (GHI) and the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at the George Mason University (RRCHNM) invite applications from postdoctoral scholars and advanced doctoral students for a 12-month fellowship in digital history.

Over the last few years there has been a stunning growth of new and exciting digital tools and methods that have the potential to augment and revolutionize traditional historical research. Historians have turned to data mining, GIS, and social network analysis—to name just a few new digital tools—to analyze source material in innovative ways and to provide unique insights for their research. Scholars increasingly need to develop their own familiarly and facility with these new digital tools and approaches in order to take advantage of their potential for their research. As a means to build out that capacity, this fellowship is intended scholars who are perhaps new to digital history but are interested in developing new skills and methods that could aid their research as well as to support junior scholars already working in the field of digital history. Additionally, the fellowship aims to connect scholars from Europe to the digital history landscape in the United States.

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation invite proposals for Digital Edition Publishing Cooperatives. Working together, the Cooperatives will develop technical and human infrastructures to support the digital publication of documentary and scholarly editions and to provide for their long-term preservation, discovery, and use. This initiative responds to the urgent need of scholars and documentary editors for reliable, sustainable, authoritative, and field-driven outlets for publication and discovery of digital editions. At the same time, we hope to investigate the possibility of creating a federated system or systems for publishing and sustaining digital editions.

Opportunity: Early Modern Digital Agendas – Network Analysis

We invite applications to attend Early Modern Digital Agendas: Network Analysis, a two-week institute to be be hosted at the Folger Institute, Washington DC, from 17-28 July 2017. This will be the third iteration of Early Modern Digital Agendas, each of which has been generously supported by the NEH’s Office of Digital Humanities. Under the direction of Ruth Ahnert (Queen Mary University of London) and Jonathan Hope (University of Strathclyde), and with an expert visiting faculty, our focus will be on the best practices for building and curating network analysis projects while ensuring that each participant comes away with their own understanding of how such work fits into broader developments within the disciplinary fields of early modern studies and Digital Humanities. The ultimate aim is to give participants the practical skills to use these methods in their own work.

The Scholars’ Lab is proud to announce that applications for our prestigious Graduate Fellowship in the Digital Humanities are being accepted for the 2017-2018 academic year. Applications are due February 28, 2017. The fellowship supports ABD graduate students doing innovative work in the digital humanities at the University of Virginia. The Scholars’ Lab offers Grad Fellows advice and assistance with the creation and analysis of digital content, as well as consultation on intellectual property issues and best practices in digital scholarship and DH software development.

The Programming Historian Needs YOU…to help historians digitally analyse! We’ve published 57 peer-reviewed tutorials since we launched in 2012, and we’re proud of our pioneering role within digital humanities. These lessons are on topics as wide-ranging as introductory Python programming, Web Scraping, and Regular Expressions. Many of our lessons involve learning how to extract and structure information from other people’s websites and databases. This has been an unfortunate need because of decisions in digitisation made in the first decade of the twenty-first century by organisations that assumed we’d want to read digital texts like we read them in the library: one word at a time.
