Editors’ Summary: This post reviews a conversation between researchers from Mozilla AI and Internet Archive Europe on computing infrastructure dependency. For digital humanists, we use cloud-based systems on a daily basis, whether that is to store research data, digitized primary sources, machine learning models, etc. As seen in events like AWS’s major outage in the US in October 2025, cloud infrastructures are mostly controlled by few major companies, yet, they remain brittle. As we engage with more and more born-digital materials, data curators need to consider the benefits, risks, and ethics in using certain cloud-based infrastructure.
