Editors’ Choice: Stories from Black Physicists in Our Collections

Editor’s Summary: Modern sciences in the United States has been a predominately white-dominated workplace. This project at the American Institute of Physics collects oral history interviews from Black and African American physicists. This project addresses the lack of narratives in the history of science, especially physics, from minority communities. The need to record the perspectives of practitioners from various backgrounds is important for any discipline because the production of knowledge is often influenced by the researchers themselves. By including the stories of scientists from different backgrounds, we highlight the hard work that might have been forgotten or overshadowed, as well as build an intellectual environment based on our compassion as humans toward one another. This project is an important reference for future researchers trying to address the lack of minority voices in scientific institutions.
