Editors’ Choice: Escaping the Technology Trap, Reclaiming Liberalitas

DHNow

Our take: In “Escaping the Technology Trap, Reclaiming Liberalitas,” Rosalyn Metz introduces a four-part series adapted from her closing keynote at the Fantastic Futures conference of the AI4LAM community. This first post sets the stage for the argument to come. Rather than focusing on how generative AI works, Metz asks how libraries, archives and museums can stay true to their mission as the technology changes around them. She frames these institutions as civic infrastructure that helps communities build skills and independence. The series will draw on two readings, Carl Frey’s The Technology Trap on the politics of labor and technological change, and Helena Rosenblatt’s The Lost History of Liberalism on the classical idea of liberalitas. We look forward to following the series as it unfolds.
