Editors’ Summary: In this article, the authors discuss the importance of participatory transcription for GLAM work through a case study of Zooniverse. Zooniverse is a platform for crowdsourcing data, including transcription. This article provides a framework of four common challenges in the creation, design, and execution of these projects. The authors identified variety, units of transcription, single-track transcription or multi-track transcription with aggregation, and bias as the four common challenges found in participatory transcription projects. They argue that participatory projects are more important than ever, despite the rise of AI.
